Nouns, subjects, and objects
These three words are often confused, not only by people learning English, but by English speakers!
1) A noun is a type of word. A noun is a person, place, thing, or animal.
“man” “woman” “house” “door” “dog” are words that are nouns.
2) The subject of a sentence is always a noun. A sentence in English ALWAYS has a subject. The subject is before the verb in a sentence.
I, You, He, She, It, We, and They are called subject pronouns, because they can be the subject of a sentence.
The old man lives alone.
The house that he lives in has a big yard.
The front door of his house has a window and two locks.
A big brown dog goes to the front door when someone comes to the house.
3) The object of a sentence is always a noun. A sentence in English sometimes has an object, but not always. The object is after the verb in a sentence.
me, you, him, her, it, us, and them are called object pronouns, because they can be the object of a sentence.
The old man lives alone. (no object)
The house that he lives in has a big yard.
The front door of his house has a window and two locks.
A big brown dog goes to the front door when someone comes to the house.
