be is the most important verb in English. It means to exist.


The verb be is conjugated, or changed, depending on the subject.


In the present, the conjugation is I am, You are, He is, She is, It is, We are, They are.


It’s more common to use contractions with apostrophes, especially in spoken English.


I am = I’m, You are = You’re, He is, He’s, She is = She’s, We are = We’re, They are = They’re




We use the verb be in different ways. First, to identify -


I’m Robert! Nice to meet you.”


We can also identify our position, or occupation.


I’m a teacher. I’m also a husband and father.”


We use the verb be with adjectives to describe -


I’m tall, 180 centimeters, or 5 feet 11 inches.


I’m tired because it’s late.


I’m excited because it’s my birthday!


We can use the verb be with another verb with -ing to describe an action happening now, at this moment.


I’m reading a sentence.


I’m practicing English.


I’m looking at a screen. 📺
